Five awned spear grass

Open tufted annual or biennial grass. Flowering stem erect or bent, nodes hairy. Few flat or inrolled densely hairy leaves to 20cm x 0.5-3mm. Sparse to moderately dense cylindrical flowerhead 3-20cm long. 1-flowered spikelet, narrow floral bract to 4.5mm long, hair tuft at base, top with 2 lobes, central bristle to 25mm, thick and twisted at base and 2 smaller bristles on either side.
