  • Form: S. tabernaemontani is a perennial, spreading sedge with flowering stems to 2m
  • Foliage: Foliage on the River Club-Rush is reduced to a small tip on a sheath around the flowering stems
  • Flowers: Flowers are small, brown and bract-like, in large clusters held on stalks that all emerge from the same point. Flowering from Spring-Summer.
  • Fruit: Fruit is somewhat rounded, smooth, shining, grey-brown to dark brown nut to 2.5mm, with bristles
  • Habitat: This is a widespread plant, found in a variety of wet habitats with brackish to fresh water.
  • Distinctive Features: Schoenoplectus tabernaemontani has distinctive bluey-green coloured flowering stems
  • Similar species: Juncus ingens has spongy pith inside the flowering stems, whereas Baumea articulata has segmented stem, and Schoenoplectus pungens has angled flowering stems
  • Comments: This is a very useful species for revegetating wetlands
