  • Form: Juncus amabilis, or Hollow Rush, is an upright, spreading or clumped perennial, visually distinguished by the mass of green, straw-like, cylindrical flowering stems (culms); occasionally annual herbs.
  • Foliage: Mostly blade-like, sheathing the base of the culms (cataphylls)
  • Flowers: Clusters of small brown flowers along elongated stalks, surrounded by leaf-like bracts, Spring- Summer
  • Fruit: Three-sided grey-brown nut, 0.7 x 3mm
  • Habitat: Swamps and stream banks in areas of higher rainfall
  • Distinctive Features: Large stature, leaf-like bracts amongst flower and extremely sharp foliage
  • Similar species: Cyperus gunnii, often growing alongside Cyperus lucidus, is of similar size but has narrower leaves and much longer leaf-like bracts associated with flower
  • Comments: The most widespread native Cyperus in Victoria particularly in the South, yet now considered rare on the volcanic plains
