Form: Large tussocking perennial to 150cm tall with triangular shaped stems
Foliage: Leaf blades with swollen partitions, to 40cm long, shiny dark green with rough margins
Flowers: Clusters of small brown flowers along elongated stalks, surrounded by leaf-like bracts, Spring- Summer
Fruit: Three-sided grey-brown nut, 0.7 x 3mm
Habitat: Swamps and stream banks in areas of higher rainfall
Distinctive Features: Large stature, leaf-like bracts amongst flower and extremely sharp foliage
Similar Species: Cyperus gunnii, often growing alongside Cyperus lucidus, is of similar size but has narrower leaves and much longer leaf-like bracts associated with flower
Comments: The most widespread native Cyperus in Victoria particularly in the South, yet now considered rare on the volcanic plains
