  • Family: Cyperaceae
  • Form: Large tussocking perennial to 150cm tall with triangular shaped stems
  • Foliage: Leaf blades with swollen partitions, to 40cm long, shiny dark green with rough margins
  • Flowers: Clusters of small brown flowers along elongated stalks, surrounded by leaf-like bracts, Spring- Summer
  • Fruit: Three-sided grey-brown nut, 0.7 x 3mm
  • Habitat: Swamps and stream banks in areas of higher rainfall
  • Distinctive Features: Large stature, leaf-like bracts amongst flower and extremely sharp foliage
  • Similar Species: Cyperus gunnii, often growing alongside Cyperus lucidus, is of similar size but has narrower leaves and much longer leaf-like bracts associated with flower
  • Comments: The most widespread native Cyperus in Victoria particularly in the South, yet now considered rare on the volcanic plains
