Form: Bolboschoenus medianus is a perennial sedge up to 2m tall
Foliage: Leaves alternate up the stems with a sheath at the base, blades about 50cm long , 6-11mm wide, flat, grass-like
Flowers: Flower clusters at the tops of the flowering stems, umbel-like, with 4-6 branches bearing clusters of 1-6 spikelets, subtended by 2-6 leaf-like bracts
Fruit: Nut plano-convex or trigonous with concave faces, 3-4mm long, 2-2.5mm diameter, shining, mostly non-obviously reticulate
Habitat: Grows in swamps and around waterholes
Distinctive Features: Differs from the other species in its unequally trigonous nut and style varying from 2-fid to 3-fid in the one inflorescence
Similar species: Vegetatively, very similar to Bolboschoenus fluviatilis
Comments: Fine leaf favoured by water birds for nesting material
