Tall sedge

Robust, erect tufted perennial grass. Green or purple dense flowerhead. Plant as drift through trees or use as accent plant in garden beds.

  • Form: Large erect tussock to 120cm tall
  • Foliage: Bright green, arching blades to 120 x 1.2cm, with rough edges and distinct fold along midrib, giving them a ‘v’ shape in cross-section.
  • Flowers: Composed of small brown bracts densely clustered at the ends of long erect angular flowering stems with three flat edges.
  • Fruit: Yellow-brown oval-shaped nut type seed only a few mm in size
  • Habitat: Common along water courses and wet depressions throughout Australia and surrounding countries
  • Distinctive Features: Large tussocking form, with bright green leaves and angled flowering stems
  • Similar Species: Carex teriticaulis flowering stems are cylindrical. Other Carex and Cyperaceae species have branched flowers
  • Comments: The leaves are used by Aboriginal people in basket making
